Making its bid to remain America's best-selling vehicle, Ford is counting on styling tweaks and new features to seal the deal. A four-wheel-drive 2018 F-150 Limited with 375-horsepower, 3.5-liter turbocharged V-6, and 10-speed automatic transmission delivered on Ford's promises in a test drive. The gearbox is smooth and decisive, with none of the hunting among gears that has plagued some transmissions as they add more gear ratios. You'll likely find the Platinum and Limited to be similar in terms of comfort. If that's why you're springing for a more expensive truck, you'll probably be perfectly content with either Platinum or Limited.
Either way, you go, you get SiriusXM satellite radio, B&O Play premium audio, SYNC 3, Wi-Fi hotspot, voice-activated navigation with Sirius XM Traffic and Travel Link, keyless entry and ignition, power-adjustable pedals with memory, rear parking sensors, MyKey for teen safety, and 110-volt/400-watt Power Inverter in front and back. Where the Limited shines is in its array of safety features. For details, read on.
The Platinum checks off all the boxes for safety needs. Rearview camera. Blind-spot monitoring. Rear cross-traffic alert. Even inflatable safety belts for the backseat passengers. But it can't hold a candle to the safety powerhouse that is the F-150 Limited.
The Limited boasts a dizzying array of features to keep you and yours safe. They've pulled out all the stops on this top-trim beast. There's the 360-degree camera, pre-collision assist with pedestrian detection, active park assist, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, pre-collision assist with pedestrian detection and a lane-keeping system. All these safety features are on top of everything else a Ford F-150 can offer.
The Platinum looks ready for the future. On the face, you get a satin-aluminum-finish and three-bar-style grille with chrome accents and a bright mesh insert. There is large 20-inch aluminum wheel. And inside you can get dark red over black leather seats. The side view mirrors drip with chrome.
But if you're a collector and want to show off distinctive decals and branding, get the Limited. You'll be pleased to hear about the door-sill scuff plates with "Limited" lettering, the body-color bumpers, and the body-color mirror caps. All exclusive to the Limited. There's also a dual-pane moonroof on the crew cab version.
Both of these luxury limos have virtually all the options you might want on a pickup, but this particular battle is between which is safest. While the Platinum trim level gives you more safety features than all the lower trims, the Limited really blows it out of the water.
