The CL63 AMG delivers a more visceral experience with its AMG-developed 6.3-liter normally aspirated V8 (518 hp and 465 lb-ft) that's paired with a performance-tuned version of the seven-speed automatic transmission. The end result is a 0-60 time equal to the CL600. The truly power-hungry will lust after the CL65 (604 hp and 738 lb-ft), which can leap to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds and possesses high-speed acceleration more akin to a Formula 1 racecar than a comfy four-place GT.
The ultra-performance-focused AMG versions offer even more powerful engines as well as unique exterior enhancements, sport-tuned suspensions, high-performance brakes, 20-inch wheels, and AMG multi-contour leather sport seats. The seven-speed transmission is, of course, standard in this CL, but it doesn't feel as sporty as it does in other applications. The C63 AMG has much more aggressive transmission programming, which might make the CL more entertaining if you decide to push it hard. That's missing the point though. The CL is a great cruiser and does best running down long stretches of wide open roads.
The V8's mountain-sized torque (465 lb-ft, also the most of any series-produced non-blown eight) made passing the ubiquitous tour bus a small matter of tapping my right foot on the accelerator, confirming through the seat of my pants the factory claim that this new, larger and heavier second-generation CL will run from 0-62 mph in only 4.6 seconds. This is the seventh car to get treated with AMG's astonishing new V8, the first Mercedes engine to be engineered and built totally in-house at the AMG plant. It pulls like a muscle car and sounds a little like one, too, but it revs like a race engine.
